Grandma Tala

Village Crazy Lady, or Wise One?

A Teacher

Moana's grandma is seen as Motonui's crazy lady, but to Moana, she is a voice of wisdom. Grandma Tala is the first voice we hear passing down the story of how the world came to be, created by nature. She later tells Moana she was there the day the Ocean chose her to carry out the journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Her grandmother encourages her to fulfill her destiny and in this helps Moana answer her one burning question, "Who am I?" Grandma Tala understands the significance of nature in a spiritual realm and ensures Moana that these feelings of faith in nature are right and to follow the path the Ocean chose for her. In this context, Moana's grandmother is a huge influence on Moana's faith, by passing down the oral literature of their Polynesian beliefs in the island Gods and power of the Ocean.

A Spirit

After Grandma Tala's death, Moana sets out on her journey to restore Te Fiti's heart and bring the islands back to harmony. Eventually, this journey begins to look grim after Moana and Maui are defeated by Te Ka. Following this defeat, Maui decides to abandon Moana, and she is left alone in the middle of the ocean. We see Moana break down and lose her faith, then the manta ray spirit of her grandmother appears. Once again, from beyond the grave, Grandma Tala is here to guide Moana on her greater journey. She returns Moana to the question she so desperately seeks the answer to; "Who am I?", to which Moana now sees clarity. Grandma Tala never gives Moana the answers, but rather leads Moana to find the truth in herself and faith in nature. By her grandmother coming back as a manta ray spirit swimming through the ocean Moana is reminded to have faith in nature and its bigger plan. This message from beyond the grave only strengthens her belief. Grandma Tala has always taught Moana about the significance of a belief system in nature. From teaching her ritual dance as a way to stay connected to nature and ensuring she trust the Ocean, Grandma Tala has taught Moana the one thing she can always rely on is nature.
